Help!

October 30, 2006

Does anyone have a spare fan for a Dell Dimension 8100? Ours has packed up and we now have a very big and expensive paperweight.

The problem is compounded by the fact that Dell no longer make or supply the fans, and they use a non-standard plug to power the fan so I can’t just nip into PC World and get any old fan…

If you can help out, or point me in the right direction, I’d be very grateful!

(This is doubly frustrating as we actually have a replacement computer sitting in the house, but Santa’s not due for a few weeks!)

    Hey big guy!

Get a dvd of apollo 13 and review the scene with the flatheads @ mission control constructing the air scrubber from a roll of gaffer tape and a sick bag. your new fan will look something like their life saving efforts.

went to the science museum with the wee guy on saturday – he now lectures passers by that the apollo re-entry capsule is his daddy’s favourite thing and the bottom is like a bit of burnt toast.

always fun watching the dads gazing dreamily at the moon rocket displays – somehow the frontiers are different now – and you know they are thinking that twenty years earlier they could have done it, or reciting the names of the twelve men who walked on the moon.

might put up some of my own post about the science museum soon.

    Hi Again

Actually on a more serious note the reason Dell don’t have a spare is that fabulous economic system of JIT supply – just in time.

This means that Dell get precisely the number of fans they need the day before they need them. then they use them. and don’t have any of that aweful wasted surplus spare parts nonsense in their own expensive storage space.

The result, as you now painfully know, is that the “next major assembly” after the fan is the whole computer itself.

    Built in INSTANTANEOUS obsolescence!Kerching!

Just buy an 80mm 12v fan from PC World, and snip off the molex type thingy, and replace it with the dell one.

    Hi D

I do’t know if it is an exact replacement… but it’d be better than nought. Email me and we’ll do some business, guv’nor!
